Life

+ St.  Hyacinth (🇵🇱 Jacek, 🇪🇸  Jacinto) was born in 1183 in Silesia, in Kamieniec, of pious Odrowąż parents who were so good at bringing up their children (Czesław, Bronisława and Hyacinth ) that they all became saints. – Jacek received his higher education in Prague. He then returned to Krakow, where Bl. Wincenty Kadłubek ordained him a priest, made him a canon and his advisor.

Sent to Rome in 1217 on diocesan business, he met St Dominic there and took such a liking to his monastic rule that, together with his brother Czesław, he received the habit from the hands of the founder of the Dominicans. – Having returned from Rome in 1220, he preached the word of God in the towns of Silesia and Poland. – In 1223, Bishop Iwo, his uncle, built for him a monastery in Krakow, near the Church of the Holy Trinity, in which he brought up numerous Polish Dominicans, and sent him to preach the word of God in the towns and villages of Poland, Lithuania, Prussia & Ruthenia. St. Hyacinth himself, dressed in a hairpiece, would go on foot with his brothers, organise popular missions and, wherever he found benefactors, set up monasteries. –

He worked longest in Ruthenia where he converted many souls to God. In Kiev, when he had finished Mass, he was informed that the Tartars had invaded the city, robbing and murdering the inhabitants. St. Hyacinth, thinking nothing of it, took the can with the Blessed Sacrament and was about to flee with it. Then he heard a voice: – Hyacinth, have you taken my Son, and will you leave me here? He took the marble statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary in his other hand and, not feeling its weight, happily left the city, crossed the Dnieper River on foot, reached Halicz and then returned to Krakow via Lvov.

In Cracow he strengthened his monks in the monastic virtues, recommending them in particular to study and to carry out missions in the villages and towns. – In 1257, on 15 August, after morning prayers, he confessed and, taking the viaticum and the holy oils, took the Cross and the image of the Blessed Virgin Mary in his hand and, sighing piously, “Lord, into Thy hands, I commend my spirit” he closed his eyes for ever. He had loved Mary during his life, he had spread Her veneration and the Rosary, so Mary rewarded him for this too. Blessed Bronislawa watched in awe as the Blessed Virgin Mary led the soul of St. Hyacinth amidst choirs of angels to heaven. Pope Clement XIII counted him among the saints in +1594.

Points for meditation.

The pious upbringing of children when they are young is the foundation of their happiness for life.

Fervent devotion to Blessed Virgin Mary facilitated St. Hyacinth ‘s progress in religious perfection, and gave him strength for his missionary work. Through Mary he did much good during his lifetime.

Be a fervent devotee of Mary too, and invoke her help before every job.

Prayer.
Almighty and eternal God, Thou who hast glorified Thy follower St. Hyacinth with his preaching, holiness of deeds, and the splendour of his manifold miracles, grant us that, imitating his virtues, we may improve our lives and, through his intercession, be free from various misfortunes and adversities. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

  1. On this, his joyous feast, we raise
To Hyacinth glad songs of praise:
And, piercing through the clouds above,
We offer God hearts pure in love.
  2. Received into the Preacher-band
And vested by the Father’s hand,
From others soon he stood apart,
    A man of apostolic heart.
  3. Of Dominic a faithful son,
In him the Father’s virtues shone:
    By following his leader’s light,
He triumphed o’er the prince of night.
  4. To him the Virgin fair did bring
The joy and solace of the King:
In him the grace of Christ did shine
By virtue of a power divine.
  5. O Mary, Mother of all grace,
Mother of mercy to our race:
Protect us now from Satan’s power,
And own us at life’s closing hour.
