St. Charles Borromeo, Bishop and Confessor

informacje

St.Charles was born in Milan – in 1538. At the age of 23, he was appointed cardinal and archbishop of Milan. By working with his uncle Pope Pius IV, he brought the Council of Trent to an end. He zealously implemented the resolutions of this council in his diocese. He organized the first theological seminary, held 16 synods, and tirelessly visited dioceses. Generous to the poor, in times of plague he gave them everything, even his own bed. He personally led the penitential processions, walking barefoot in a coarse sack and carrying a heavy cross. He died on November 3, 1584.

Ecclésiam tuam, Dómine, sancti Caróli Confessóris tui atque Pontíficis contínua protectióne custódi: ut, sicut illum pastorális sollicitúdo gloriósum réddidit; ita nos ejus intercéssio in tuo semper fáciat amóre fervéntes.
Ever keep Thy Church, O Lord, we beseech Thee, under the protection of blessed Charles Thy Confessor and Bishop; that through the intercession of him who became glorious by his watchful care over his flock, we may ever burn with love for Thee.

St. Pope Pius X, in 1910 published the encyclical “Editae saepe” in honor of St. Charles Borromeo, on the 300th anniversary of his canonization.
